I heard plenty of “flex your ankle†and “use your rear foot†during the two-day telemark workshop in Canaan Valley, West Virginia. These two tactics link to motion control and a balanced stance, both are key concepts of telemark skiing; both are difficult to get.
What are you supposed to feel so that you know you are flexing your ankles? I tried numerous times to use my ankles in every possible direction, but I was never sure whether “my shin muscles are tightened.†Those shin muscles did look different but I wish they could be as evident as six-packs; as sensitive as biceps.
Instructors taught us that if we lift one ski and try to shake it, it will move crazily if we don’t flex our ankle, and it will be quiet otherwise. However, when you are shooting downhill, there are too many things to cause you to go out of control. It’s tempting to blame on the ice or bumps because I honestly don’t know whether I’m flexing my ankles.
Another concept, “use your rear foot,†is easier to please, but that doesn’t mean your body is so willing to cooperate. Telemark skiing requires this special stance, which looks just like a lunge workout. People who have experience telemark skiing must not feel strange about this concept that we should put equal weight on both feet. The center of gravity then falls in between the two feet and it helps to form a well-balanced body position. We therefore are in charge, and are finally able to command our skis.
It seems like human nature that we like to lean forward. I lean forward typing until I remember my mom’s voice reminding me to keep appropriate distance between my eyes and the computer. I lean forward while running until I remind myself to straighten my upper body. I lean forward on skis until my instructor reminds me to use my rear foot. My instructor, who has a degree in psychology, said “you almost have to tell your mind to put 70% of weight on your rear foot to achieve the 50%.â€
At least it is easier to spot when you are not putting equal weight on both feet. First, the rear foot should stand on the ball, not on the toes. Second, the rear foot is the steering foot, so if you don’t give enough weight to your rear foot, your rear ski will have the tendency to drive into the front ski.
I basically spent the whole workshop trying to communicate with my rear foot. Starting from keeping the stance to traverse the slope with snow-plow turns, and side-slipping all the way down to the base, I was glad that I was able to pack several successful telemark turns back home.
Of course there are some other concepts that I need to pay attention to: 1. moving the hip and forming a C-shape into the fall line; 2. maintaining a quiet body; 3. pointing the toes and knees to the direction of travel. But the most important thing for me now is to accumulate some mileage. I hope that soon I’ll be able to manage telemark turns without a lead change, AKA “goofy turns.â€

Telemarking is one of the most difficult sports I’ve tried. The boundary between a nice controlled turn and head-first, limb waving spasms always seemed very small. And the work! Getting that “mileage” will build thighs of steel. It’s all very rewarding, though, especially if you manage to catch some backcountry runs 🙂
